ECFiber Update
Town Meeting, 2008
Twenty five Vermont towns will vote on the ECFiber warning at Town Meeting this coming week, and we want to remind you to attend and to vote for the project.
With all of the support and pre-registrations we've received, we're looking forward to all of those towns giving their selectboards the authority to proceed with the project. We have over 1400 pre-registrations from residents of the towns voting on this project, and more pre-registrations every day. It's a great show of support.
If you are unsure of the time or location for your town meeting, we've listed all of the meetings and when the ECFiber vote will be taken on the homepage at www.ecfiber.net. If you have neighbors or friends who don't yet know about the project, or who need a nudge to participate and vote on the warning, please forward them this email and let them know how important it is for this to pass. A resounding YES vote will show selectboards and potential funders how widespread the support for this project is.
At town meeting, these are the points that will probably be discussed:
- ECFiber is planning to build a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in as many as 25 towns in East Central Vermont. The service will provide cable television, telephone service, and high-speed Internet over a fiber-optic network.
- There will be no cost to the towns, no bonds issued, towns will receive property-tax equivalent payments from the network, and will eventually receive payments from subscriber fees.
- The project will be owned by the towns, funded by the subscribers, and operated locally. This means high-quality jobs and high-quality local service, with local people to call for help when you need it.
- Many of the towns involved have broadband committees that have studied the options, and all are recommending the ECFiber project as the best solution. There are several other community fiber-to-the-home projects that have been very successful in other parts of the country, some with over 60% of residents signing up for those services.
- ECFiber has presented information about this project to the new Vermont Telecom Authority, the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, and the Vermont Municipal Bond Bank, and their initial responses were all very positive. We're grateful for their support for this project.
To help support this project, here's what you can do:
- Support the article at town meeting
- Tell your friends and neighbors about pre-registering at www.ecfiber.net. Yellow cards to send in will be available at town meeting, or you can pre-register online at www.ecfiber.net/pre-register. The more pre-registrations we get, the clearer it is to funders how much support there is for the project in the community.
- Remind everyone at the meeting that complete information about the project is available at www.ecfiber.net.
- If you operate a business or are involved in a non-profit organization, visit the ECFiber website for a sample letter of support that you can fill out and send in, to indicate how important you feel this project is for our community.
Thanks for all of your support.
